Heat Transfer at MSCD

Experiment 4 - Armfield Heat Exchanger Analysis

Three heat exchanger types are available for study: (a) Parallel tube, (b) Shell and tube and (c) Plate and Frame.

Click on Experiment Documentation for details of this experiment.

Shown is the Armfield Plate and Frame heat exchanger attached to the Armfield bench which supports the experiment by providing measured water flow rates of hot and cold streams. Thermocouples instrument the inlet and outlet flow temperatures permitting the student to calculate the thermal transfer between streams.

This is a screen image of the experiment controller software installed on the experiment's laptop. Using this software, students can set the heated water setpoints along with flow rates for both the hot and cold streams. Additionally, data and setpoints can be output to log files at different sampling rates for subsequent analysis.
Here Dave McCallum, lab manager for the Engineering Technology department, is explaining the control software to a student team before turning operation over to them.
