We use the building thermal analysis program "HOT2XP" developed by the National Research Council of Canada.
This program is comprehensive; it contains libraries for construction details, weather data, and utility bill expense.
The objective of this experiment is to model a known dwelling, to enter a year's worth of electric and gas usage,
then to compare predicted energy use and cost with the actuals as given by the utility bills. Once the dwelling model
has been refined so that predictions and actuals are in reasonable agreement, the program can be used to determine
the advantage for investing in thermal improvements such as ceiling and wall insulation, and double glazing of windows.

The program, HOT2XP, has been installed on the technology computers for your use. You have to use a portable
file saving medium, such as a floppy disk, or inexpensive USB flash drive, to record your work in progress since you cannot
store your work in these machines. Shown here is one of our students using one of the machines for this purpose.
Since these machines are usually available you can work on this experiment when convenient for you.
